Opening Day 2014

Superintendent Hickey welcomed back the Washington Local Staff with an annual Opening Day program. He shared highlights of the state grade card, celebrated academic achievements, and reminded us of our accomplishments and events that are unique to our district. He spoke of togetherness, courage, and learning from each other and from our kids. Whitmer graduate Dallas King and his mom, Diana, were guests who spoke about the impact that our district has had on them. The morning was filled with love, laughter, and tears as we kicked off the year. "Together Has Power. Together We Can." BCSNSuperintendent Hickey on BCSN's One-on-One
Superintendent Hickey was a guest on BCSN's One-on-One program hosted by Tom Cole. Mr. Hickey speaks of the Washington Local Schools, school funding in Ohio, and his leadership in the district. [ video ]

Military Order of the Purple HeartPurple Heart Awareness Week

The Washington Local School District is the first district in the nation to be recognized as a Purple Heart School District by the Military Order of the Purple Heart organization. On behalf of the students, staff and community members, Superintendent Hickey has proclaimed May 25-29, 2015 as Purple Heart Awareness Week. [ proclamation ]

WLS Treasurer Earns Auditor of State Award

For the fourth year in a row, Jeff Fouke, Treasurer and Chief Financial Officer of the Washington Local School District, has received the Ohio Auditor of State Award. A recent financial audit of the district by the Ohio Auditor of State Dave Yost's office has returned a clean audit report. The award was presented to Mr. Fouke by Derek Merrin, Regional Liaison for the Northwest Region Office of the Auditor of State , at the May 21, 2014 Board of Education meeting. [ press release ]

2014-2015 School Calendar Revised

The Board of Education approved a revised school calendar for 2014-2015. Due to changes in the testing and assessment schedule set by the Ohio Department of Education, the delayed start days used for district staff training and professional development are revised:

  • Addition of one Delayed Start on September 18, 2014
  • Elimination of two Delayed Start days on February 26 and May 5, 2015

Whitmer Band and Orchestra Boosters Annual BBQ
The annual Whitmer Band and Orchestra Boosters BBQ will be held Thursday, August 28, 5-6:30 pm in the Whitmer Stadium (Rain location – Whitmer Auxiliary Gym). Pre-purchase tickets from any Whitmer instrumental student or from the Boosters; a limited number of tickets will be sold at the BBQ. See flyer for more details. Candy Budd Amazing Race
The 2nd Annual Candy Budd Amazing Race, held in memory of Candy, begins promptly at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 13th at Sidelines Sports Eatery and Pub (2111 Mellwood). At this time, teams will be assembled and embark upon their first race challenge for the evening! As they race against the clock throughout the Washington Local School District, teams will attempt to complete a series of tasks located on their race card. The goal will be to earn as many points as possible by snapping photos of their team accomplishing tasks on their race card. Prizes will be awarded to the top 3 finishing teams!! In addition, all participants & supporters are invited back to Sidelines at the culmination of the race for complimentary snacks and the opportunity to win several other prizes we are raffling off.

The cost to participate in the race or to support this event is $10.00 per person. Registration cost includes a race t-shirt along with a donation to the WLS Employee Memorial Scholarship Fund in Candy's name. Additional monetary donations are also accepted. All proceeds from the raffles being held will also benefit the scholarship fund. Completed registration forms should be sent to Theresa Evearitt @ McGregor School no later than Friday, September 5th.
